Upon its release of the Windows XP family of operating systems, Microsoft
announced that its Java virtual machine would no longer be included as part of
the default operating system installation. This precludes users of
these versions of the operating system from running Java applications.
This also means that Internet Explorer is no longer Java-enabled by default.
The VisionNet system requires the use of a Java-enabled web browser in order to
function because the real-time image streams are delivered to the web
browser via a Java applet.
If you attempt to view images of your child on Windows XP without Java support
installed, you will be notified at that time that Java is
required. You will have to download and install a suitable Java run-time
environment in order to run the VisionNet application.
VNet-Systems recommends that you
download and install the Java 2 Runtime Environment provided by Sun
Microsystems, the company that originally developed and authored the
Java language. The reason for this recommendation is due to Microsoft's
decision to essentially halt further development efforts on their
Java virtual machine. Microsoft's Java implementation is based on one of
the first Java language specifications. Because the Java
language is constantly being enhanced to provide greater levels of
functionality, security, and performance, Microsoft's Java implementation
is lacking in the area of these evolving enhancements. While the current
level of the Microsoft virtual machine for Java will support the
VisionNet application with no problems, it is entirely possible that the next
version of VisionNet that is released will no longer run on Microsoft's Java
implementation, regardless of the version of Windows you may be running.
If this is the case, VNet-Systems will post a special bulletin on our web
site alerting you of the situation. We will also notify you of any
changes via the e-mail address you entered when you registered for your
VisionNet account. Please
be aware that it is a good practice to remove any previously-installed Java runtime
software before installing a newer version.
If you decide to download and install
Java, make sure that you do not already have it installed on your system.
How do I do this?
